Digestive problems according to TCM
Hyperacidity of the stomach is very common in modern society, and mainly arises from the eating and living habits of modern people. If you drink coffee or cola every day, if you eat chocolate, cakes, or any other sweets very often, or if you frequently lie down within 3 hours of eating, then you have a high risk of suffering from hyperacidity of the stomach.
The descending function of the stomach is necessary to transport the ingested food down towards the small intestine. Normally, the Qi of the stomach has to move downward and not upward. If the stomach is irritated, then the Qi of the stomach can move upward, thus causing acid reflux. This may lead to heartburn, which is just a symptom of hyperacidity of the stomach.
Fortunately, solving this problem is not difficult at all, as we can use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to help restore the Qi of the stomach to its proper downward flow, and thereby enhance digestion. Following treatment, if patients are more careful about what they eat and drink, then hyperacidity of the stomach won’t happen again.
Healthy people should have daily bowel movements. If there is no bowel movement in a day, it can be regarded as constipation. Constipation does not necessarily cause pain, but it is harmful to the human body. For example, constipation can:
1. Affect beauty: Long-term retention of feces in the intestines leads to abnormal fermentation of wastes, and can produce many harmful toxins which in turn may lead to acne, facial pigmentation, rashes, and so on.
2. Lead to obesity: Toxins cause large intestine edema, and inhibit blood circulation in the lower body, thus often causing the abdomen to take on a pear shape and accumulate fat.
3. Produce body odor: The accumulation of toxins can cause bad breath and body odor.
4. Affect sleep: Constipated patients may have difficulty falling asleep or experience light sleep.
When you suffer from constipation and only go to the pharmacy to buy chemical laxatives, or drink herbal tea laxatives, as a result you develop a dependency on laxatives to have bowel movements. This is definitely not a good solution.
If you come to TCM 5 Balance, dr Yang will use Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, or moxibustion to help restore your digestive elimination to its natural function. Once your intestine works properly, you can defecate normally every day without relying on any medicine.
TCM divides diarrhea into 2 types: one is characterized by deficiency, the other by excess.
Deficiency usually occurs in people with weak digestive functions. Patients with long-term diarrhea are prone to malnutrition, anemia, poor energy, and weak immunity. We can use Chinese herbal medicine and moxibustion to warm their spleen and stomach to strengthen digestion.
Excess usually occurs in patients with too much stool retained in the digestive tract. This excess stool can cause gastrointestinal dysfunction and diarrhea. To treat this type of diarrhea, we have to eliminate the excess stool from the body, after which the diarrhea will stop.
